Ho Tung Esq.
Sir,
Hongkong, 4th December, 1899.
Plan
We enclose you herewith a plan showing coloured red a vacant piece of land to the east of the ground which has been granted by the Government for extension building to the Tung-Wa Hospital, and, as arranged this afternoon, we take it you will apply to the Government to be good enough to extend their favour and give you in addition the land coloured red about 98' x 65'. As a matter of fact the loss to the Government would only be the area coloured dark red and 98’× 45' or say about 4410 square feet, as if built upon by strangers the Tung-Wa Street shown on the plan would have to be retained.
The Government will want to know the reason for your application and the strongest is that on planning the building to your requirements we find that not only do we fail to meet the necessary accommodation but that the limited room is, in our opinion, sadly overcrowded, and Dr Atkinson saw this at once. Also, as he pointed out it will not do to have maternity wards next to or adjoining the operating Theatre and we are at a loss to know where to find space for these wards.
